Mountfort Park Water Polo Club is really pleased to announce that the Waterpolo Institute (WPI) will be back again in 2017 to help develop our coaches, referees and players.
Our committee is thrilled that Kurt will be joined by Jonathan Ware next year too. It is fantastic to have two such skilled and experienced water polo exponents - to help make our great club even better.
Kurt and Jon will be training and coaching teams for us, they’ll take a high performance programme each term and perhaps a school holiday programme here and there, they will lead a coaching and referee development programme, deliver an introduction to water polo for Year 5/6 school teams later in the year and generally be available on a regular basis for advice and mentoring at trainings, tournaments and competitions.
ABOUT KURT AND JON: Kurt established WPI in 1999, and is currently head coach and CEO. He has coached in the New Zealand Water Polo high performance programmes from 1999 until 2011. He coached the New Zealand representative schoolboys from 2000 - 2002, winning the Trans-Tasman trophy twice and the Tri-Nations the first time it was competed for. Kurt was the NZ Junior Men’s head coach at five world championship campaigns from 2001 to 2009, with the 2005 team defeating both USA and Slovakia, and was the head coach of the NZ Men’s team from 2009 - 2011.
Jonathan is a qualified personal trainer, a former New Zealand senior men’s player, and was the Junior Men’s Coach 2010 - 2013, assisting Kurt from 2007 - 2009. In 2006 he played in the NZ Men’s team that won bronze at the Commonwealth Games. As NZ school boys coach from 2006 – 2013, he won the Trans-Tasman test 3 times and Tri-series once. He was head coach of the 2012 NZ Youth team that finished 10th at World Champs and he was also assistant coach to Kurt for the NZ Men’s team.
These two have led club, school and national water polo teams to many successes.
The WPI has worked with Mountfort Park Water Polo Club since 2015, focusing on development of athletes, volunteers, referees and coaches. Long-term objectives in working with our club are to significantly increase the skill and knowledge base of our members and to ensure growth of our wonderful sport in the Counties-Manukau area.
